Drunk, Busted and Puking

DrunkIt’s a rotten morning in America. Waking up in jail hung over and ill by your own hand is not really worse than waking up every morning in this great nation today. What atrocities have our newest leaders conceived overnight? What follies have the followers of the madman in the White House enabled overnight as he careens from edict to edict in the flush of his new found power?

In Search of Sanity

Sanity is a great, if illusory,  goal for most humans. I’ll use of all of the sane things about our society leaves us in a sorry state. Sanity is in the search for peace. The ability to recognize when we are becoming too powerful for our own good. The knowledge that life is too short to spend it all trying to rise higher in some hierarchy is a tiny part of sanity, but an important one.

Tribes opinions facts and sanity

jokerIt is generally true enough to commonly be believed that humans tend to sort themselves out over a lifetime. We tend to do that for better or worse as the world we live in demonstrates daily. We sort thing into hierarchies and build gestalts, sets of linked facts that we use to make decisions and draw conclusions. We also establish opinions that can take the place of facts in our world view.

Sowing the wind and reaping the whirlwind

Our new President is no butterfly. The maelstrom about the abrupt ban on travel from several Muslim majority nations is not tuned to the beat of a butterflies wing. It appears to be more in tune with a whole swamps worth sized swarm of mosquitoes. Unfortunately, despite the pocket despots dreams of total power, it has drained more blood from his credibility around the world than from his opposition. Of course the scientific principle that action begets reaction is not unknown to him. He wants the reaction. The bigger the reaction the more powerful he feels.

Dominance Games

We are caught up in a new round of dominance games by the people we have granted the power to run our government. Dominance is how the power to rule people against their will or wishes is attained. We have served that master class before and always found government by their lights and facts wanting. Our new President thinks that the election granted him dominion over our lives and our government. He embodies the opposition to all the moral and ethical principles that made this nation great. He is a coward, a bully and worst of all a liar. How can we expect him to make this nation great? Serving the higher truths our founders set out in their Declaration of Independence is what made us great.

How do you know if you’re angry?

It seems rather obvious, first you look in the mirror for tell-tale signs of foaming at the mouth. Expletives, focused mainly on those below you in whatever hierarchy you are operating at the moment will do if foam is not visible immediately. If you are human, when you are angry you are far more likely to punch down at weaker targets than to punch up at whoever pissed in your soup in the first place. This seems to be a universal human characteristic, unless one is very well trained at dissimulation or in much rarer cases, very civilized.

Jobs as a measure of security?

jobsYour jobs are going away. Trump cannot bring them back unless he reverses a lot of economic and technological changes. That would require the powers of a dictator strong enough to turn back time. It would also leave behind a devastated world without hope or any reason to believe in the long term survival of the human race. Admittedly, like most of us males over twelve he can be a dick, and occasionally, like most of us humans, he makes a tater look smart. But let’s not make him a dictator in pursuit of turning back time to the 1950’s.

A Trip Down memory lane -- written last year

James Brien Comey patriot or traitor?

Jim ComeyThose are really serious words to describe a man in a major position of trust in the US government. There should never be a question regarding the character of such a person who was selected to be the head of the major investigative body we call the FBI. A question of this nature might be asked of any government official who treated their office as a source of personal preference but never a person thought as above partisan political motives as Jim Comey was before the recent election.

Ruling versus Governing

sealThere are distinct and rather significant differences between approaches to running this nations executive branch. Every President in our history understood that his job was to govern the actions of those beneath him in the bureaus and branches of our government. Governing is all about defining limits, not just making decisions. Ruling is all about deciding what course to take at any given time then doing it. At times every President in our history sought more power in order to resolve a conflict between his legal authority and some perceived need of our nation. The Courts inevitably provide the boundaries of executive power here.

Enlightenment: Letting the light in beats using your brain as a source of lamp oil.

David Brooks is a decent sort based on my experiences in reading what he has written. He doesn’t seem out of balance or very dedicated to being right at the cost of betraying his human values. Lately he has even found some things to criticize in the “Conservative” attempts to change the world. He is apparently a fan ot the enlightenment and believes that Republicans have recently lost sight of the torch of freedom. He does not quite go to where I think they are headed, waving it about so wildly that they light their own brains on fire.
